I watched in vain to see if CNN’s action hero journalist Anderson Cooper and his cable news counterparts would take their shows on the road and report live from the scene of the carnage. Would the talking heads of the news networks spend weeks analyzing this story as they did the story about a ridiculous nobody who threatened to burn a Koran? Silence.
My fear is that a pattern or template has developed in regards to reporting on the Church that insists that in most stories that are presented, the Church must be portrayed as a victimizer rather than as a victim (as a simple google survey of stories about the Catholic Church can demonstrate).
The horrifying attack on the cathedral in Baghdad just doesn’t fit this prejudice, and in fact turned it on its head. Folks in the media just didn’t know what to do with this, and it shows in the paltry amount of attention that it has received. But for us Christians, we have no excuse to keep silent. It is time for us to speak up and demand that the victims of this atrocity receive the attention that they justly deserve. The blood of the martyrs compels us. <<
